Happy Halloween

How did your Halloween go?

It’s much more of a thing here in England than ever it used to be.

Once autumn hits in, the shops are full of plastic tat – landfill here we come – and spooky outfits and treats.

At our local B&Q while looking for exterior paint for my Shed of Dreams, we were greeted by a store assistant dressed as a pumpkin.

She didn’t mind having her photo taken but didn’t want her face in the picture (yet she was comfortable with spending the entire working day resembling a distant relative of the Tango Man).

Still, I was happy to oblige. It’s not every day you have a conversation with a pumpkin in Aisle Three.

Creeping Americanisation has been blamed for the commercialisation of 31 October.

But it does mean a lot more fun for children in a world where mirth is in short supply. And in our village, it’s become quite a thing for trick or treaters to go out after dusk – the little ones with their mums – on the lookout for pumpkin lanterns in windows. This is the unspoken sign that you’ll get a kindly reception from the householder and a stash of sweets.

This year, our modest decoration – four solar-powered tealights – were overshadowed by the delights of the B&B next door, which lured youngsters in with ghosts, pumpkins, skeletons, axes and spiders.

As a result, we had only one set of visitors and, consequently, loads of sweets left over. I’ve been searching for a ‘use by’ date on the packs but to no avail.

Mr Grigg reckons they’ll be okay for next year, but I’m thinking Christmas at the latest.

Hope you’re having a great week.

That’s about it.

Love, Maddie x
